A brick factory on a quiet country road near Hosur, Tamilnadu. Each time I drove past this factory, the sight that met my eyes was the silhouette of this old lady walking the aisles, at an even pace. Even as I speak to her, she continues ferrying the bricks to and fro.
She is 84 years old, and has been working here for decades. Married at nine and widowed at twenty four, she is a mother of ten children. She has buried 8 of her ten children, and lives with one of her two remaining sons.
“Now my son takes good care of me. But people change. When I gave birth to eight sons everyone said I’m a blessing. But when my husband died young, they said I’m a curse. So, I’m not taking any chances, I work and earn money, so I don’t have to depend on anybody.”
