Travel tips and advisory for high altitude travel

We remain cautious about the fitness of our participants for a trip like Spiti. We have conducted a number of very successful trips to Spiti. However, every person has different coping levels to high altitudes and young age or physical fitness may still not guarantee easy acclimatisation. Here are some tips and advisory for the trip

  • Proper Rest:  A well-rested body copes better with altitude stress. Our night in Solang is to facilitate that. Ensure you get enough sleep during your stay.
  • Hydration is Key: For acclimatisation, staying hydrated is crucial. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol to minimise the risk of altitude sickness. A minimum of 3 to 4 litres of water per day is advised. Sometimes water doesn’t do as much justice hence keep some sachets of ORS like Electral handy and keep taking sips of it.
  • Gradual Acclimatisation: Allow your body time to acclimatise to the altitude by spending the first day in Solang without strenuous activities. Slowly increase your physical exertion over the next few days. We have planned our itinerary in a way that gives us ample time to do that. So, it might look like we are not doing a lot in a day but that is because we are not travelling to plains.
  • Altitude Medication: Consult a doctor for altitude sickness medication, like Diamox, before your trip. This can help prevent and alleviate symptoms. If you are already consuming any blood thinner medicine in your regular chart then mention that to the doctor specifically.
  • Indigestion is another reason why people feel nausea when they reach high altitude regions, hence it is advisable to keep in hand digestive/ antacids of your choice or ask the host for natural local home remedies. Have a light meal on the first day of arrival to avoid indigestion. Consume a diet rich in carbohydrates and low in fats. This helps in acclimatisation and provides energy for your body to cope with the altitude.

Note > Prepare > Accept > Embrace:

  • Higher altitudes require a certain level of fitness. We are not strictly trekking anywhere but even climbing up the stairs or a little steep walk to the monasteries or any sightseeing areas will feel like treks, given the altitude (around 6500 to 15000 ft altitudes). Langza is at 14500 ft.
  • You will need to sign an agreement with F5 that you are undertaking this trip after your doctor’s consultation on travelling to high altitude.
  • Expect traffic jams! (especially enroute Rohtang Pass)
  • Power is scarce in the region. Most stays will have back ups but do not expect generators to run water heaters in absence of power. Hot water buckets will be provided to you in case there is no power
  • Please note that we stay in boutique and locally run hotels and they will have their unique rooms. Please do not compare your rooms with fellow travellers. They will all be of the same comfort level but will have different aesthetics and sizes.
  • This is a ROAD TRIP, to one of the most treacherous routes in the country, no less. The rewards are unbelievable but the journey will prove tiring. There are no restaurants or rest rooms enroute. The villages on the way will have a population of 30 to 50 people. Please reconsider if you have back or knee issues. Our longest stretch will be on Day 7 when we are travelling from Kaza to Manali (around 10 hours).
  • We start our days as early as possible, especially on the days of long travel.
  • We promise you a relaxed day after a day of long travel.
  • Please pack a Hot-Water Bag as a precaution for warming the bed (example)
